A waterfront wander and Readymoney’s shore give Fowey a good free core, with the parish church when open and St Catherine’s Castle for those ready for a steeper climb. Parking, food and the Polruan ferry still require their own budget.
Begin with forty-five minutes around Town Quay and the adjoining streets, pausing to watch the working estuary. The church is nearby if open for a quiet visit; allow twenty to thirty minutes rather than building the day around an unconfirmed opening time. Bring lunch or set aside a food budget before continuing along the waterfront towards Readymoney. Allow twenty to thirty minutes for that walk and an hour at the cove, with time to sit and enjoy the view without needing to swim. If the weather and your footwear suit, the castle adds a steep woodland approach and a short visit to the ruins. It is an optional branch, with the same descent to consider afterwards. For a shorter free visit, stay with the quay and church exterior or interior when available, then finish with lunch in town. Free admission does not mean an easy surface throughout: Fowey has hills, narrow streets and gaps in pavements, while the castle has muddy paths and unguarded drops. Do not depend on the seasonal steps from the beach, which may be unavailable at high tide or removed for winter. The aquarium charges most visitors and the ferry charges for each direction, so neither is part of this free selection. Check parking signs and current local access notices rather than assuming the town’s visitor parking is free.

Fowey’s waterfront is a place to watch a working estuary rather than a single enclosed attraction. Town Quay gives an immediate view of boats and the steeply stacked houses across the river, while the surrounding streets provide independent shops and plenty of reasons to stop for a meal.
Fowey’s parish church stands close to the busy quay but offers a different scale of visit: a brief look at its historic architecture and a pause inside when open. Its tower is a prominent town landmark, and the church remains an active place of worship and community events.
Readymoney is Fowey’s small sandy cove near the estuary mouth, reached by a waterfront walk from the centre. The beach, benches and views make a worthwhile destination on their own, with the climb to St Catherine’s Castle an optional extension rather than part of every beach visit.
This small Tudor artillery fort above Readymoney guarded the entrance to Fowey Harbour. Its ruined gun tower and coastal position reward a short exploration, but the approach is a steep woodland climb and the site has unguarded drops.
