Choose an indoor subject you could happily spend time with: art and natural history at Kelvingrove, transport at Riverside, or experiments at the Science Centre. Glasgow has generous museum options, but its geography makes a string of short visits less appealing when every transfer means going back into the rain.
A straightforward wet-weather half-day is two to three hours at Kelvingrove with an hour for lunch or a warm drink. Choose a few galleries and pause before deciding whether to continue; for a shorter visit, keep one gallery group and the meal. These are editorial allowances. Science is a paid alternative that rewards a longer visit and advance planning for timed shows. The Burrell works if you organise the journey through the park and any shuttle wait, rather than assuming the railway station is at the entrance. Check current opening, access and parking notices before leaving. In heavy rain, spend the whole outing at one venue and leave the garden and river walks for another day.

Kelvingrove makes an expansive first introduction to Glasgow: paintings, natural history and design share a red sandstone building beside the park. Choose two or three galleries that catch your interest rather than trying to cover the entire collection. Its variety is useful when your group cannot agree on a single subject.
Vehicles and a recreated Glasgow street make the city’s transport history tangible. Look at how people travelled, worked and shopped, then compare the old street with the engineering of the museum building outside. This is a stronger choice for transport enthusiasts than another general art collection.
Hands-on investigation is the reason to spend time at the Science Centre on Pacific Quay. Give the exhibits room in the day: trying, discussing and repeating an experiment takes longer than walking past a display. Planetarium and cinema options should be chosen for your interests and ticket type, rather than assumed to be included.
The Burrell puts art and collected objects into a woodland setting in Pollok Country Park. Spend time looking closely at a few pieces, then change pace with a meal or a short outdoor wander. Coming south for this collection deserves its own half-day rather than being squeezed between West End museums.
Glasgow’s medieval cathedral offers a different layer of the city from its grand civic museums. Look up through the Gothic interior and spend time with its stained glass and connection to St Mungo. It is a living church, so let worship and the sightseeing arrangements set the pace.

Yes: the general collections at Kelvingrove, Riverside and the Burrell are free. Food and travel still cost money, and special exhibitions may need a ticket. Choose a museum close to your planned route rather than crossing the city just to add another stop.
