Wander between the Market Place, High Street and nearby lanes, noticing timber patterns, plaster colours and the different scales of former merchants’ buildings. A short walk can make more sense after a museum visit has supplied the context. These are lived-in streets, so enjoy houses from public places and leave private doorways clear.
Pick up a village map at the volunteer-run Hub when open. You can explore independently; paid guided walks and phone-based audio tours are separate options.

- Public street browsing needs no ticket. Food, shops, museum entry and organised walks cost separately. The Hub is staffed by volunteers; check its opening if you need a map. Do not assume a photographed house is a visitor attraction.
- Access and getting around
- This is not a traffic-free precinct. Expect narrow or missing pavement in places, kerbs, slopes and uneven surfaces, especially towards Water Street. Choose a short section that suits your mobility and take care at crossings.
