LEEK GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A miniature train ride beside the water / NEAR LEEK

Rudyard Lake Railway

Enjoy a small-scale railway outing rather than using the train simply as a shortcut on a long walk. The ride gives families and rail enthusiasts a different view of the lake, and can be the main treat of a modest half-day at Rudyard. Keep time for the station and a short waterside pause instead of packing the visit around the last departure.

Before you go

Check the railway’s own running-day calendar, then plan the return before leaving the station. It is a separate operator from Rudyard Lake, so lake opening does not mean trains are running.

The practical details

Where to find it
Rudyard Station, Rudyard, near Leek
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Tickets are currently sold at the station on arrival. Check running dates and the ticket type, and confirm special-event arrangements separately. Do not rely on the train as guaranteed return transport from an unplanned long walk.
Access and getting around
The railway asks visitors needing step-free train access or assistance to contact it in advance. Its stations have no accessible/step-free toilets; the operator directs visitors to the lake visitor centre. Confirm the practical route and facilities before travelling.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
A manageable main attraction for a family visit when trains are running. Keep children behind platform boundaries and allow for waiting; a short ride does not require everyone to complete the lake walk afterwards.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1–1½ hours including waiting and a ride for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
