Savernake Forest

Choose a walk among veteran trees and varied woodland habitats, beginning from an established access point such as Postern Hill. The forest is large enough to deserve its own plan, with a map and a route matched to your group. A short walk and picnic can be more rewarding than searching for every named tree.

Forestry England’s current notice describes work begun in July 2026 and possible temporary closures. Follow barriers and signs even when machinery is not visible.

Tickets and booking: The forest and Postern Hill parking are currently free. The car park has a closing gate; check the current time and return well before it shuts. No barbecues, camp stoves or fires. Check forestry operations before choosing your route.
Access and getting around: Paths include surfaced and unsurfaced stretches with variable ground. Forestry England lists no designated accessible parking bays at Postern Hill. Contact the operator about a route that meets your needs; do not assume all forest tracks are easy-access trails.

Visiting with children: Bring a picnic and choose a short route before setting off. Seasonal toilets at Postern Hill are currently listed from Easter to the end of October half-term, so make a different plan outside that period.
