Keep a wet-weather visit compact: The Merchant’s House is the main indoor attraction, with St Peter’s offering a smaller cultural or architectural stop when open. Check both before travelling.
Book a guided house tour if you want its explanation, or use ordinary admission during the historic rooms’ opening hours. The operator currently lists Monday to Saturday and an earlier last-entry time than the shop’s closing. A shop still trading does not guarantee time to see the house. Allow an hour to ninety minutes, remembering that uneven floors and stairs remain part of the visit even when the weather keeps you indoors. St Peter’s lies at the other end of the High Street, roughly ten to fifteen minutes away without stops. Check whether the building, a particular event or the coffee shop is open: those are different questions. The coffee-shop information is inconsistent across the operator’s pages, so confirm directly if lunch there is essential to your day. The main building has level access and small internal ramps, but the tower is a separate stair climb rather than a simple rainy-day alternative. Bring waterproofs for the High Street transfer and leave time for a meal in an open town venue. This collection offers a useful half-day indoors, not an endless list of sheltered attractions. Stonebridge Meadow can become wet underfoot, Savernake is still an outdoor forest with working areas, and Avebury’s stone circle is exposed. Save them for appropriate conditions. For a shorter visit, do the house and a nearby food stop; if the house is closed on your chosen day, check a dated St Peter’s event or choose another day instead of expecting equivalent drop-in indoor choices.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Go beyond the shopfront into the house of a silk merchant, built after Marlborough’s great fire. Painted decoration, timberwork and the process of restoration give the rooms their interest. Choose a guided visit for more explanation, or ordinary admission when you prefer to move at your own pace.
Visit the historic building at the western end of the High Street, now used for cultural events and community activity. Its architecture gives a different perspective on the town from the shops outside. A coffee stop or an exhibition can make a pleasant pause, but what is available depends on the day.
