Stonebridge Meadow and Wild River Reserve

Leave the shops for a gentler pace at the meadow and wetland beside the Kennet on the eastern side of town. Grass paths, boardwalk sections and river habitat make this an outing for noticing small details rather than covering a long distance. Wildlife appearances depend on the season and conditions, so enjoy the place without expecting a particular sighting.

Before you go

Use the council’s Trail One description to choose the approach and optional meadow loop. Beyond the boardwalk, the route becomes rougher and can be wet.

Tickets and booking: Independent access is free. Bring suitable footwear and take litter away. Check current notices and avoid riverside paths during flooding; arrange food and toilets in town instead of relying on facilities in the meadow.
Access and getting around: The council describes narrow, uneven and sometimes wet paths beyond the boardwalk, and advises omitting the meadow loop for a more accessible route. Read the full route before starting; boardwalks do not make the entire reserve step-free.

Visiting with children: Stay beside children around open water and keep to the paths. Use observation rather than disturbing wildlife; follow any livestock or conservation notices and avoid wet ground if footing is uncertain.
