Old Bridge and the town heritage trail

Use the official town trail to connect the Old Bridge, streets and park with stories from the museum. You can enjoy the bridge as a short stop or follow the longer route with its heritage commentary. Treat the walk as a way to understand the town, with refreshments and indoor visits chosen separately rather than crammed into its walking time.

Before you go

The full official route is about 3.2km from the museum to the market. A bridge stop is a much shorter alternative, and viewing it does not require crossing its steep historic span.

Tickets and booking: The self-guided walk is free. Download the official route before starting, check park access and do not rely on entering the museum or market outside their opening times.
Access and getting around: The linked trail leaflet includes steps and a steep Crossbrook Street section, with a flatter alternative marked on its map. Review that route rather than relying on the webpage’s broad “mainly flat” description. View the Old Bridge without crossing it if the approach is unsuitable.

Visiting with children: Break up the route with a park pause and shorten it before children tire. Take care at road crossings and beside the river; it is a public town walk, not a traffic-free attraction.
