Norman castle & views / RICHMOND, NORTH YORKSHIRE
Richmond Castle
Explore the grassy ward, ruined halls and towers of the castle above Richmond’s Market Place. The keep gives a high view over the town and Swaledale if you are comfortable with its stairs. Exhibitions also tell the story of the conscientious objectors imprisoned here during the First World War, adding a later human history to the medieval defences.

Make the keep climb optional. You can enjoy the castle’s scale and exhibits without making a steep staircase the test of a successful visit.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Tower Street, Richmond, North Yorkshire DL10 4QW
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Paid general admission; English Heritage members enter free with membership evidence. Advance online booking by the previous midnight offers a discount, with same-day tickets also available. Check the dated calendar for seasonal opening; do not rely on summer hours in winter. The cell-wall graffiti is interpreted through exhibits, not a promise of unrestricted entry to the cells.
- Access and getting around
- Main ward access is over mown grass with some gravel; the keep and Cockpit Garden require original steps. The visitor centre has a stair lift to the exhibition and an accessible toilet. Cobbles, low walls, slopes and steep uneven stairs need care. Check current vehicle/drop-off arrangements with the site.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Choose the heraldry interactive or a few features to find, with adult supervision near low ruins and drops. The stories of imprisonment and war may need explanation for younger children. Keep a waterproof handy for the large outdoor part of the visit.
