Things to do in Richmond, North Yorkshire when it rains

The Green Howards Museum makes a useful central start on its normal Monday–Saturday opening days. Its lifts and indoor displays let you spend time with individual stories before stepping back into the Market Place for lunch. Richmondshire Museum offers a different indoor focus on town and Dales life, but normally opens only April–October and also closes Sundays. Pick the subject that interests you most; there is no need to spend a wet day in every museum. The Georgian Theatre Experience is a strong second choice during the tour season, with an approximately fifty-five-minute guided visit and departures normally on the hour. Check the cancellation list before timing lunch around one: this is a working theatre, and some afternoon tours are removed for other use. The under-stage area has different access from the auditorium, so ask staff to plan the right route if stairs or enclosed spaces are a concern. An evening performance requires its own ticket and timing. The Station offers changing galleries and a separately ticketed cinema across the river. Its businesses have different hours, so check the film programme or café booking rather than assuming every service runs all day. Getting there from the centre involves the hill, bridge and crossings; allow extra time on wet surfaces or arrange transport. The castle contains exhibits but much of the visit is outside, and the falls are not a bad-weather substitute. For a shorter outing, one museum and lunch are enough; on Sundays or outside the museum season, centre the visit on The Station instead.
