RICHMOND, NORTH YORKSHIRE GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

River views & riverside green / RICHMOND, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Richmond Falls and The Batts

Walk downhill from the town for the River Swale’s falls, then choose a short stretch beside The Batts, the grassed riverside area downstream. The water and valley setting make a strong contrast with the high Market Place and castle. This is a bankside view and picnic option when conditions suit, with an uphill return to include in the day.

Before you go

Keep back from wet rocks and the water’s edge. After heavy rain, choose a safer town-level alternative rather than going close to the falls for a better photograph.

The practical details

Where to find it
Millgate and Riverside Road, Richmond, North Yorkshire
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
The public riverside visit is free with no attraction ticket. Parking near the falls charges and is limited. Conditions change with rainfall; avoid flooded routes and follow any closures. The longer walk to Easby Abbey is a separate outing, not part of this short visit.
Access and getting around
Approaches from the Market Place descend steeply and some town routes include steps and cobbles. Riverside ground can be wet, muddy or slippery, with open water nearby. Check local signs and choose a route for your mobility needs; turn back if water or ground conditions deteriorate.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Supervise closely near the river and use dry grass well back from the edge for a break. This suggestion is for looking from the bank, not paddling or swimming. Leave energy for the climb back to town.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 30–60 minutes, plus the hill approach for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
