Scarborough Castle

The headland explains Scarborough before any map does: the castle stands between the two bays, with the old town below and sea on three sides. Before you go

Arrange the uphill approach and the return before setting off. If you need the castle’s Tramper, request it in advance and wait for confirmation; its route cannot reach the steep area around the Great Tower.

Tickets and booking: Check the date-specific admission and opening calendar. Advance online booking can reduce the price; membership and companion terms apply separately. Contact staff at least 48 hours ahead for direct Tramper bookings.
Access and getting around: Grass, cobbles, gravel and gradients affect the grounds; the keep involves steps. Limited disabled parking must be reserved. A bookable all-terrain Tramper helps on an assessed route but does not reach every area and may be unavailable in poor weather.

Visiting with children: Children can follow the shape of the defences and compare the two bays. Supervise around unfenced ditches and drops. Do not promise easy pushchair travel: rough surfaces and steep sections need planning, and the open headland is exposed.
