Wet weather makes Scarborough’s museums especially useful, but their calendar matters as much as the forecast. The Art Gallery and Rotunda form a compact pair near the town centre and South Bay. SEA LIFE offers a longer booked family visit at Scalby Mills, with outdoor sections that still need rainwear.
On a Tuesday–Saturday opening day, allow 45–60 minutes at the Art Gallery, a 10–15 minute transfer downhill towards the Rotunda and 45–75 minutes in its open galleries. Add 45 minutes for lunch, placing the break wherever the current closing times work best. These are editorial estimates; the walk is outside and includes a change of level. Their shared adult pass avoids buying unrelated admissions, but the gallery’s first floor has no lift and the Rotunda’s West Wing is closed. For a shorter plan, choose one venue and a warm food break. On a Sunday or Monday, check SEA LIFE availability and arrange transport directly to it rather than arriving at closed museums; prebooking is essential and a reservation alone does not replace a valid ticket. Its outdoor animal areas make it a mixed-weather attraction. Do not use the castle or a long exposed promenade walk as a rainy-day substitute simply because they are close on the map.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Look at Scarborough through artists’ eyes in a former family villa on The Crescent. The collection and changing exhibitions offer a different pace from the seafront: choose a few pictures, return to a detail that interests you and leave room for conversation afterwards. It pairs naturally with the nearby Rotunda if you want a cultural half-day.
The Rotunda puts Scarborough’s coastline into a much longer story. Its circular Georgian gallery, fossils and prehistoric collections connect the seaside town with ancient landscapes and the people who lived in them. Choose it for a compact object-focused visit, especially if beach discoveries have prompted questions about the rocks and life along this coast.
At the northern end of North Bay, the aquarium brings marine habitats into focus through tanks, the ocean tunnel and animal areas including penguins and seals. Choose it as the main family visit for this end of town, with time to watch behaviour rather than rushing between displays. The attraction includes outdoor areas as well as indoor galleries.

Both current visitor pages list Sunday and Monday as closed. Check before travelling, especially around holidays or special events. This two-museum plan is written for an ordinary Tuesday–Saturday opening day.
