Seaside / SCARBOROUGH
South Bay beach and harbourfront
South Bay is Scarborough’s busier seaside scene: sand, the harbour edge and the rows of places to eat and browse beneath the old town. Come for a short foreshore wander or a longer beach pause, with enough time to watch the harbour from public areas. Paid amusements and boat trips are separate choices, not included parts of a free seafront visit.

The upper town is above the foreshore. Plan a suitable route down and back up; Central Tramway can help when operating, but check its current timetable rather than relying on every historic cliff lift being open.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Foreshore Road and Sandside, beneath Scarborough’s town centre and old town.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Ordinary beach and public promenade entry is free. Amusements, refreshments, parking, tram rides and cruises cost separately. Check current tide/weather information and any local barriers before choosing how far to walk.
- Access and getting around
- The promenade and the sandy beach have different access demands. Central Tramway has level carriage access at both stations and a slight incline at the bottom approach; confirm current operation and equipment suitability. The steep walk from town should not be assumed an easy alternative. Pay-on-entry toilets are listed at Vincent Pier and St Nicholas Gardens, with Changing Places at St Nicholas Gardens; check access arrangements in advance.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Sand time depends on tide and conditions, with close supervision beside water and harbour edges. RNLI’s published 2026 daily patrol season ended 6 September. Check flags and advice on the day; there is no year-round lifeguard promise.
Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
Allow 45–90 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
