Kelham Island Museum
Tools, workshops and powerful machinery explain the people and processes behind Sheffield’s manufacturing reputation. Follow small-scale craftsmanship through Little Mesters Street and compare it with the River Don Engine’s enormous scale. The museum works best as the main reason to visit Kelham Island, with a meal in the area afterwards.
The River Don Engine normally runs Thursday–Sunday, subject to exceptions. Upper Transport Gallery and Simplex displays are closed for events on 19, 25 and 26 September 2026; check the live notice before travelling for the cars.

- Free general entry with optional donations. Normally closed Mondays including bank holidays; museum opening does not mean the engine runs daily. Parking can be charged and is unavailable on major event days; check the current visitor page rather than older claims of free parking.
- Access and getting around
- A firm path crosses the cobbled entrance area, but Little Mesters Lane remains cobbled and the Crossley viewing platform has stairs. Lifts serve museum floors. Running machinery is noisy; ask about ear defenders and quieter areas.

- Choose a few machines or tools and leave time to talk about how they were used. Engine demonstrations can be loud and may not suit every child. Outdoor spaces and industrial equipment need close supervision; this is not a free-play site.
