ST ANDREWS GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Gardens & ecology / ST ANDREWS

St Andrews Botanic Garden

Woodland, meadows, ponds and experimental planting spread across this 18-acre garden on Canongate. The rock garden, pinetum and changing habitats reward a slower outdoor visit, with the garden’s work on ecology giving it a different focus from a formal flower display. Allow time to sit, notice seasonal changes and choose a route that suits the ground conditions.

Before you go

Plan this as an outdoor garden. Do not arrive expecting the old heated glasshouse collection: the garden has changed direction and developed new planting areas.

The practical details

Where to find it
Canongate, KY16 8RT
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Adult admission is paid; current concessions include free entry for children up to 16 and accompanying carers. Check opening and ticket details before travel. Winter hours shorten, there is a Christmas-to-New-Year closure period, and extreme weather can close the garden.
Access and getting around
A 1.2-kilometre accessible loop uses mostly flat metalled and grass paths. Other areas, including parts around the ponds, have steeper ground or steps. The visitor centre has a ramp and an accessible toilet; a loan wheelchair should be booked ahead. Benches and shelters provide pauses.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Children aged 16 and under enter free under the current admission policy. Leave time for looking closely at plants and wildlife rather than completing every path. Supervise children near water and check which seasonal activities are running. Working assistance dogs are allowed; ordinary pets are not.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1½–2 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
