St Andrews Castle
The castle combines a cliff-edge setting with the history of the bishops who once occupied it. Begin with the visitor-centre interpretation, then follow the open route across the bridge into the ruins. Leave time for the courtyard and sea views rather than treating this as a quick photograph. The mine, countermine and Bishop’s Apartments are currently closed.
Check the current closure notice before buying a ticket. Older descriptions of the underground passages do not mean they are available to enter.

- Book a dated ticket online and check opening hours, last entry and the latest restrictions. The mine, countermine and Bishop’s Apartments are closed even though older access descriptions still describe them. For specific requirements, email standrewscastle.vo@hes.scot.
- Access and getting around
- The visitor centre has five steps or a ramp without handrails and level access inside. A roughly 50-metre route over reinforced grass strips and a wooden bridge reaches the grassy courtyard. Upper levels involve steps and spiral stairs. An adapted toilet is beside the exhibition; a limited accessible parking bay is outside.

- Start with the exhibition to give the ruins a story, then choose a manageable outdoor circuit. Supervise children around stairs and exposed edges. Do not promise a tunnel adventure: the mine and countermine are closed. A wet or windy day can shorten the outdoor part considerably.
