Coastal ruins / ST ANDREWS
St Andrews Cathedral grounds
The open-air remains show the scale of the medieval cathedral, with St Rule’s Tower rising above the grounds. Walk the available paths, look across the surviving walls and leave time to enjoy the setting near the eastern end of town. This is a free outdoor visit; the cathedral museum and shop are currently closed, and conservation barriers limit parts of the graveyard.

Stay on open paths and keep away from fenced gravestones. Ask HES about a guided tour if the tower is important to your visit; a climb is not an ordinary unrestricted part of grounds access.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- The Pends, KY16 9QL
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Ordinary grounds admission is free during site opening hours. The museum and shop are currently closed. HES advertises free guided tours with an opportunity to climb St Rule’s Tower at the end; email standrewscathedral.vo@hes.scot for current timings, availability and suitability. Winter hours are shorter.
- Access and getting around
- The memorial gate gives level access to a compacted-gravel path running through the site. Other areas have steps, raised thresholds and uneven ground. Follow the available route around conservation barriers and ask HES separately about any tower-tour requirements.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- A short search for surviving arches and the outline of the huge church can work better than a long history lesson. Keep children off the masonry and grave markers; fenced areas contain unstable stones. This exposed site needs weather-appropriate clothing.
Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
Allow 30–60 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
