Beach & dunes / ST ANDREWS
West Sands
West Sands stretches for almost two miles beside the golf links, with open sea views and a broad sweep of sand. A short out-and-back from the town end gives you the atmosphere without committing to the whole beach. Designated access points protect the dunes, and beach zones separate different uses. Choose a walk, a picnic or a sandcastle session according to the weather and current notices.

Set a turnaround point before you start. Wind, soft sand and the return journey can make a beach walk take longer than it looks from town.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- West Sands Road, St Andrews
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Walking on the beach does not need an admission ticket. Equipment hire and organised activities have separate arrangements. Check Fife Coast and Countryside Trust notices, RNLI patrol information and SEPA bathing-water advice; follow signs protecting the dunes and estuary habitat.
- Access and getting around
- Sand is soft and the available approach depends on the access point and conditions. Beach-wheelchair hire is signposted through the Hamish Foundation; arrange availability and a suitable route beforehand. Use designated dune crossings. Check public-toilet opening arrangements before relying on them.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Choose the town end for a shorter family session and keep clear of areas used by sand yachts or other activities. Check current tide, weather, water-quality notices and lifeguard dates before considering the water. Patrols are seasonal; a beach photograph or summer listing does not establish cover on your date.
