ST DAVIDS GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A living cathedral in the valley / ST DAVIDS

St Davids Cathedral

Explore the medieval cathedral and its long association with pilgrimage, then take time to look at the building from the close. Its position below the city streets is part of the experience: you descend into a quieter setting beside the River Alun. Ordinary visiting is by voluntary donation, with worship and special events shaping what is available.

Before you go

Check visiting hours and the service calendar before coming, particularly on Sundays. Allow time for the climb back into the centre rather than assuming the short distance means a level walk.

The practical details

Where to find it
The Close, St Davids SA62 6RD
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
There is no compulsory ordinary admission charge; donations are welcome. Organised groups must arrange visits in advance and may have fees. Events, guided arrangements and restricted areas have their own terms. Check the day’s visiting window; attending worship is different from sightseeing.
Access and getting around
The route down from the city is steep, with camber and gutters on The Pebbles. Merrivale offers a less steep approach. Limited disabled-driver parking needs advance booking, normally at least 48 hours; ask about South Porch drop-off. A wheelchair is available inside and there is an accessible toilet in the South Cloister.

Visiting with children
Keep a visit focused on a few building details and leave room for a break outside. This is a working place of worship, so keep voices low and follow staff guidance during services. Ask about current family activities rather than assuming a trail is available every day.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1–1½ hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
