Things to do in St Davids in the rain

Start with the opening that matters most to you. The cathedral’s general visiting window is shorter on Sundays and can change for services or special events. Oriel y Parc’s main gallery closes before the wider discovery centre. Check both before travelling, then allow around an hour at one and lunch before deciding whether to continue. You do not need to stretch a small city’s indoor choices into an all-day checklist. The cathedral offers architecture, local religious history and a quiet place to pause, but the approach is outside and steep from the main streets. In wet weather, footwear and the route back up matter. Merrivale is less steep; people with significant mobility needs should discuss drop-off or prebooked disabled parking with the cathedral. Do not leave that arrangement until arriving at the bottom of the hill. Oriel y Parc makes a different indoor stop, with art exhibitions and advice about the National Park. It has automatic doors and lift access to the main gallery and tower. Check current exhibition content and any booked activity separately, especially with children. The café has shorter opening than the gallery or discovery centre, so plan lunch before its closing time or choose somewhere in the city. The Bishop’s Palace has interpretation in parts of the surviving structure, yet much of the visit is open-air. It is not the equivalent of a second fully indoor museum. Save it for a break in the weather if you are comfortable exploring ruins in waterproofs. St Non’s and the headland are more exposed, and rough ground can become muddy or slippery; they should not replace an unavailable indoor booking. A comfortable wet half-day is Oriel y Parc, lunch and the cathedral at an appropriate visiting time. The shorter alternative ends after one venue and a meal. If the weather clears, a look around the cathedral close may be enough extra time outdoors. Avoid driving to Whitesands simply because there is a café: beach facilities and conditions need their own check, and the best decision may be to return another day.
