A proper headland walk from Whitesands / ST DAVIDS

St David’s Head coastal walk

Follow the National Trust’s coastal circuit for rocky scenery, views over the bay and the remains of the Coetan Arthur burial chamber. This is an active outing on the peninsula rather than a short extension of a beach visit. The route lets you enjoy the headland without adding the separate scramble up Carn Llidi.

Before you go

Use the official route map, check wind and visibility, and allow a half-day with rests. Keep the summit scramble out of the plan unless you have separately assessed its suitability; the main circuit already has rough ground and steps.

Where to find it: Start at Whitesands car park, north-west of St Davids

Tickets and booking: No trail admission ticket is required. Whitesands parking is paid and is not a National Trust car park, so membership does not cover it. Check current path notices and the weather; arrange the journey back from Whitesands and finish within daylight. Keep dogs controlled and on leads near livestock.
Access and getting around: The official route has rugged, uneven paths, steep or narrow sections and around 70 steps. Cliff edges are unfenced and parts can be muddy in winter. It is not suitable for wheelchairs; accessible car-park facilities do not change the trail terrain.

Visiting with children: Choose this only for children comfortable with a substantial rough coastal walk and close supervision near cliffs. Carry water, food and layers. For younger children or uncertain conditions, make Whitesands beach the outing instead of promising a headland circuit.

Allow about 2–3 hours for the 3¾-mile circuit, plus breaks for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
