ST DAVIDS GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A beach outing below Carn Llidi / ST DAVIDS

Whitesands Beach

Spend time on the wide beach at Porth Mawr, with Carn Llidi rising behind it and a view towards the headland. Choose sand play, a shoreline walk or simply a pause above the bay according to the tide and weather. Whitesands is a separate journey from the cathedral streets, and it can be busy when conditions draw surfers and holiday visitors.

Before you go

Check tide times before choosing your patch of sand, and consult the RNLI’s current patrol dates and flags before considering the water. Lifeguard cover is seasonal and is not daily throughout autumn.

The practical details

Where to find it
Whitesands / Porth Mawr, about two miles north-west of St Davids
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
There is no beach admission ticket, but parking, food and equipment are extra. Arrange a road journey or check the seasonal Celtic Coaster and its last return before travelling. Café and toilet availability can vary outside the main season; do not rely on a summer shuttle in winter.
Access and getting around
A slipway provides a beach approach, but soft sand and tide conditions affect movement. Accessible parking and a mobility toilet are listed at the car park. Ask Oriel y Parc about bookable beach equipment and transport requirements; a slipway does not make the entire beach suitable for a standard wheelchair.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Keep children within reach near waves and follow beach flags. Sand play and a picnic can be the main outing without entering the sea. Dog restrictions apply across the beach from May through September; check current signs before bringing a dog.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1–3 hours, plus travel for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
