Porthminster Beach

Start or finish near the station with a visit to Porthminster’s sand and views across St Ives Bay. Its position makes it useful for families arriving by train who would rather settle at one beach than carry bags around the whole town. Allow a proper food and changing break before the journey home.

Before you go

Keep the return train in mind before unpacking for the afternoon. Getting off the sand, finding belongings and climbing back towards the station takes longer with children.

Tickets and booking: General beach access is free. Café meals, beach equipment and any activities cost extra. Check current tides, dog restrictions and lifeguard provision before making this a swimming day.
Access and getting around: The beach lies below the station; check the approach route and avoid assuming every route down is step-free. Soft sand remains a barrier. The council lists a beach wheelchair arrangement through the café: confirm availability and suitability directly before relying on it.

Visiting with children: RNLI lifeguards operate a shorter season here than at Porthmeor. Check the patrol calendar and flags for your date, supervise children and never infer safe swimming from sheltered-looking water. Toilets and food outlets are nearby, subject to opening.
