Give a wet day one dependable indoor anchor: Tate for a longer art visit, or the seasonal town museum for local history. Keep the garden and shore as optional breaks, and check opening before travelling into town.
Reserve Tate once you know the date, then plan lunch nearby and allow for an outdoor walk from the station or bus stop. Collection displays are changing through early 2027, so confirm any must-see work. Tate and Hepworth are separately ticketed; the sculpture garden includes outdoor space, so it offers limited shelter from rain. St Ives Museum is normally open April–October on its published weekdays and Saturdays. Outside that season, it cannot be your fallback. Penwith’s free exhibitions offer another short indoor art stop when open, normally Monday–Saturday, but check changeovers. Leach Pottery’s museum and cube gallery are closed for restoration; the shop being open does not mean the museum is open. Choose a subject you enjoy and spend longer there rather than buying several tickets to fill the forecast. Wet lanes, steep approaches and the exposed seafront remain between venues. In severe weather, reduce the route and check travel disruption as well as museum hours.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Give St Ives art a substantial part of the day at the gallery above Porthmeor Beach. Its collection and changing exhibitions connect the town with modern and contemporary art; the sea outside makes a useful pause between looking at works. Choose this as your main indoor visit rather than squeezing it between several beach stops.
Look beyond the art-gallery reputation at the town museum on Wheal Dream. Fishing, mining, the railway and domestic life help explain how St Ives worked before and alongside tourism. Its historic rooms and changing art displays suit visitors who enjoy local objects and stories rather than a large interactive attraction.
Explore the relationship between an artist’s working space and the sculpture garden at Trewyn Studio, where Barbara Hepworth lived and worked. This is an intimate visit rather than a large gallery circuit. Allow time to look at the garden as well as the studio setting; it makes a particularly rewarding second art stop if you have already chosen Tate.

Allow two hours at Tate and 45–60 minutes for lunch. If you still want more art, check Penwith’s opening and allow a short outdoor transfer and 30–45 minutes there. Otherwise finish after lunch. Keep a Porthmeor look optional and leave time to return to the station; no second paid booking is needed.
