Captain Cook Memorial Museum
The Grape Lane house where James Cook lodged during his apprenticeship offers a more intimate maritime visit than a harbour walk. Rooms, documents, pictures and models place the voyages in the world of the people who made them. Choose it when you want to spend time with the evidence and stories rather than simply tick off a famous name.
The historic house has small rooms across four floors. If seeing the upper-floor exhibition matters, check its access before buying tickets; the lift reaches only the first floor.

- Book through the museum’s official ticket link or check visiting arrangements before arrival. Opening reduces during November and there is a winter closure; do not assume daily year-round admission.
- Access and getting around
- Short ramps link the entrance, courtyard and ground-floor rooms; a lift carries a wheelchair and carer to the first floor. Upper floors and attic are represented by a video downstairs. An accessible WC is provided.

- Best for children who enjoy voyages, maps and historical objects. Check any workshop’s age guidance and booking separately; the small-room house is not a large free-play space.
