For sustained rain, make Whitby Museum the main visit and add Pannett Art Gallery in the same building. Allow 1½–2 hours for the museum and 30–45 minutes for art, with a 45–60-minute lunch break before or after. These are editorial estimates and you should check the separate café schedule rather than assume it matches the building. The shorter or lower-cost alternative is the gallery alone and a nearby refreshment stop. Both normally close Mondays and have winter limitations; check before travelling. If Cook’s story interests you more, reserve that historic-house visit and plan food in town, since it has no café. The Lifeboat Museum is a good short shelter on Pier Road when open, but it is not a full-day fallback. Bring waterproofs for outdoor transfers and choose accessible entrance arrangements before setting out; old buildings, wet paving and steep streets call for more thought than the map distance suggests.

Let one interest lead your visit, whether that is the Jurassic coast or the town’s seafaring connections. The park outside makes an easy change of pace afterwards.
Look at the Yorkshire coast through artists’ eyes in this small gallery sharing the museum building. The Staithes collection and changing exhibitions make a focused art stop that fits around a walk in the park. It is an appealing option for visitors who want half an hour with paintings rather than a long paid attraction.
The Grape Lane house where James Cook lodged during his apprenticeship offers a more intimate maritime visit than a harbour walk. Rooms, documents, pictures and models place the voyages in the world of the people who made them. Choose it when you want to spend time with the evidence and stories rather than simply tick off a famous name.
The former Pier Road boathouse puts Whitby’s rescue history close to the water it served. A historic pulling lifeboat, the Robert and Ellen Robson, anchors a compact collection of crew equipment and rescue stories. This is a meaningful short stop before lunch or the beach, rather than an attraction that needs most of a day.
