Whitby Abbey

The roofless Gothic church gives Whitby its great skyline, but allow time to explore the headland’s history in the museum as well as looking through the arches. Choose the abbey for a first encounter with the town’s monastic past and its connection to Dracula; the harbour views make more sense after you have walked the site.

Before you go

Decide how to reach the headland before setting out. The direct town approach involves the 199 Steps or Caedmon’s Trod; arriving by the road entrance avoids building the climb into your visit.

Tickets and booking: Compare advance entry with any membership or public-transport offer for your visit. Day admission and special evening events have separate arrangements; check the selected date before travelling.
Access and getting around: Step-free access is available from parking, with ramps into the ruins and museum. Much of the grounds is sloping grass and can be slippery; follow the access map rather than treating the whole site as a paved route.

Visiting with children: An outdoor history stop with space to look around; supervise children near the pond and signed drops. Bring layers for the exposed headland and plan a rest before the return journey.
