Whitby Museum

This is the place to look closely: fossils, ship models and objects from Whitby’s history fill a traditional collection rather than a single blockbuster attraction. Let one interest lead your visit, whether that is the Jurassic coast or the town’s seafaring connections. The park outside makes an easy change of pace afterwards.

The museum is normally closed on Mondays. Its café has a separate schedule, including restricted Sunday operation in autumn 2026, so make a lunch plan before relying on it.

Tickets and booking: Check opening days and current admission categories. Adult admission is charged for general visitors; the free Pannett Art Gallery in the same building does not make the museum free.
Access and getting around: Use the rear entrance and entry phone for level wheelchair and pushchair access. The newer wing has a lift; accessible toilets are provided. Blue Badge parking is reached from St Hilda’s Terrace; use the access page to plan arrival.

Visiting with children: A useful wet-weather choice for children interested in fossils and unusual objects. Check the current child admission eligibility and choose a few displays before attention runs out.
