Whitby West Cliff beach

West of the harbour, the broad sands below West Cliff provide Whitby’s classic beach outing. Choose a patch near your arrival point for sandcastles or a short shoreline stroll, leaving the headland and museums for another part of the day. The amount of usable sand changes with the tide, so treat the beach as a weather-dependent plan.

Before you go

Check tide times and the day’s weather before going down to the sand. Stay within a manageable return distance; this guide does not recommend a through-walk to Sandsend or a pier walk in rough seas.

Tickets and booking: No beach entry ticket is required. Parking, refreshments and hire items cost extra. Check current dog-zone signs and seasonal facilities before planning around them.
Access and getting around: The council lists a slipway, but its page does not establish an uninterrupted step-free route from every arrival point. Confirm your approach and any beach equipment needs in advance; loose sand is a separate access challenge.

Visiting with children: Bring layers and a change of clothes, and make sand play the default if sea conditions are unsuitable. Confirm lifeguard coverage on the day and follow flags; a listed service is not a promise of year-round patrols.
