Winchester Cathedral

The long nave makes the first impression, but a satisfying visit slows down around Jane Austen’s grave and the Kings & Scribes exhibition. Pair the monumental building with the smaller personal objects in City Museum next door if literary history is your main interest. Allow time to sit as well as look: this remains a working place of worship, with sightseeing fitted around its daily life.

Ordinary sightseeing and Kings & Scribes are closed 14–19 September 2026 for the flower festival and its setup. Check the live closure notices before choosing a date; festival admission has its own arrangements.

Tickets and booking: Sightseeing uses a paid annual pass; Kings & Scribes is included when open, but has shorter hours and depends on volunteer availability. Book through the cathedral and check specific tours or events separately. Entry for worship, prayer or reflection is free; that is distinct from a sightseeing visit.
Access and getting around: Ramps serve the main entrance and south door. Kings & Scribes has a lift to its three floors; the north-transept stair lift is designed for standard wheelchairs and has a 250kg limit. The crypt and Dean Garnier Garden involve steps; tower and roof tours involve 213 steps. Accessible toilets and baby changing are available in the Fleury building and café.

Visiting with children: Family trails give younger visitors a manageable focus. Children aged 11 and under enter free with a paying adult; older children have their own admission category. The quieter parts and regular prayers need a different pace from an outdoor play stop.
