Winchester City Mill
The mill brings the River Itchen into the city-centre story: you can see why this fast-flowing water mattered before continuing along the river. The historic building, interpretation and island garden make a short visit when their individual areas are open. The waterwheel is currently out of operation, so this is a visit to a mill undergoing restoration rather than a promise of flour milling.
The National Trust expects the waterwheel restoration to finish in spring 2027. Check the project page and daily area-by-area calendar; works can restrict access and a general opening listing does not guarantee the millrace or garden.

- General entry is free. Check the National Trust calendar for the exact day and the status of each area; café purchases and some events are separate. Do not travel specifically for a milling demonstration until restoration completion and demonstrations are confirmed.
- Access and getting around
- A low-gradient ramp leads from the courtyard to the entrance, but stairs lead to the mill space, millrace and island garden. The Welcome Space has videos offering a virtual view of the property and milling process. There is an accessible toilet, but no on-site parking.

- The river and the story of turning grain into food provide a short, concrete topic for children. Explain in advance that the wheel is not currently turning. Supervise closely near the water and allow for stairs rather than treating this as a fully accessible pushchair stop.
