Hospital of St Cross

The almshouse buildings and church create a quieter destination south of the centre, particularly after walking out through the water meadows. The quadrangles, gardens and sheltered stone interiors reward an unhurried visit. People still live here: enjoy the visitor areas while respecting the privacy of the Brothers and the continuing charitable purpose of the place.

Check opening with the Porter’s Lodge before making St Cross the destination of your walk. Winter visiting hours are shorter and sightseeing is closed on winter Sundays; tea-room availability should be confirmed separately.

Tickets and booking: Paid general visiting, with tours booked separately. April–October hours include Sunday afternoons; November–March sightseeing is Monday–Saturday with earlier closing. The official price table still says 2025, and old works notices remain on the access page: confirm current prices, lift status and private-event closures with the Porter.
Access and getting around: Some paths are uneven or cobbled. Ask at the Porter’s Lodge for the ramped chapel approach and current lift access to the Brethren’s Hall. Level-access toilets include an accessible toilet. Two disabled parking spaces may be reserved in advance; ordinary parking is limited.

Visiting with children: Best for families who enjoy a gentle building-and-garden visit. Allow a proper break after the walk and avoid planning a tower climb as part of ordinary entry; tours have separate arrangements. The grounds are a residential heritage setting, not a playground.
