Wolvesey Castle

High walls, broken windows and traces of rooms reveal the scale of the medieval bishops’ palace behind the cathedral quarter. This is an open-air ruin, with enough surviving structure to imagine the buildings without needing a long indoor visit. It makes a useful contrast after the cathedral or museum, and a manageable destination before deciding whether to walk further towards the meadows.

Before you go

Enter from College Street and leave enough daylight for the ruins. If the gate is shut after heavy rain, continue with a city-centre plan: flooding can close the site without an online warning reaching visitors first.

Tickets and booking: Free entry without a standard sightseeing ticket. The published pattern is daily 10am–5pm April–September and 10am–4pm October–March, subject to conditions and closures. Recheck before travel, especially after rain.
Access and getting around: English Heritage warns of uneven ground, mud and flooding after heavy rain, with closures possible at short notice. It is not a reliably firm-surfaced wheelchair route. Keep to visitor paths and follow on-site restrictions around masonry and water.

Visiting with children: Good for a brief open-air history stop with children who enjoy finding doorways and imagining rooms. Walls are ruins rather than climbing equipment; keep children close and follow the no-climbing signs.
