WINDERMERE GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A short islands circuit or a longer lake journey / WINDERMERE

Windermere Lake Cruises from Bowness

See the central lake from the water on the 45-minute Islands Blue Cruise, returning to Bowness without a stop ashore. Other Bowness departures offer longer journeys, so choose the route as carefully as the departure time. The short circuit is a useful way to add lake scenery without spending the day travelling between piers.

Before you go

Check the vessel as well as the route. The short Islands cruise is one of the operator’s least accessible options; a different sailing on a suitable larger boat may work better if steps or onboard toilets matter.

The practical details

Where to find it
Bowness Pier, Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria LA23 3HQ
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Book for your date or buy at the pier subject to availability. The Islands circuit is 45 minutes; frequency reduces in winter. Check service status, current timetable and boarding arrangements on the day. Longer cruises, museum combinations and heritage trips use different tickets.
Access and getting around
Modern launches used on Islands services have a boarding step without a handrail and steep steps to cabins. The wider fleet varies: Swift offers better step-free access and an accessible toilet, while some historic vessels have toilets down stairs. Ask the operator to identify the exact suitable departure; do not assume a pictured boat will run your trip.

Visiting with children
The short return circuit avoids an unfamiliar return pier and leaves time for a meal afterwards. Check child fares, pushchair arrangements and the actual boat before boarding. Under-fives travel free on the listed Islands ticket; indoor seating does not remove the outdoor wait or boarding steps.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45-minute circuit; allow 1–1½ hours with boarding for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
