Things to do in Windermere & Bowness on rainy days

Windermere Jetty Museum is a useful wet-day anchor if you want boats, local history and conservation. Spend most of your time in the galleries and covered spaces, then take lunch without committing to a boat trip. Parts of the lakeshore site are outdoors, so bring a coat for those links. The World of Beatrix Potter offers a smaller story-led alternative in central Bowness, with steep entrance ramps despite the mostly level route inside. Blackwell is the choice for architecture, decoration and a slower look at rooms. Arrange the journey first: the house is about a mile and a half south of Bowness and the walking route includes a busy road. Its normal Sunday closure differs from Jetty Museum’s off-season Monday closure. On a Sunday choose a confirmed opening at Jetty or Potter; on a winter Monday check Blackwell or Potter instead. A booked taxi return can make more sense than walking the road in poor visibility. Do not add the Islands cruise just to stay under cover. The launch may have indoor seating, but boarding and queues are outside, access is stepped and service can change with conditions. Save Orrest Head and the uneven Millerground paths for weather in which you want to be outdoors. If combining Potter and Jetty, allow a fifteen-to-twenty-minute outdoor transfer and a separate meal break. For a shorter day, one museum and lunch are enough; check January maintenance and holiday exceptions before leaving home.
