Orrest Head

Walk up through Elleray Wood to the viewpoint above Windermere town, with the lake and surrounding fells opening out at the summit. It is a rewarding small fell outing close to the railway station, but it still involves a sustained climb. Take time at the top and return before tired legs turn the descent into a rush.

Before you go

Follow the blue signs if using the improved route. Red-path alternatives have steps, and the wildlife sculpture detour is not part of the adapted route. Check the map before setting off.

Tickets and booking: The public walking route has no ordinary admission fee or booking. Use the current National Park map, check weather and daylight, and follow any local closure signs. Toilets and food are in Windermere town rather than on the fell. Parking or transport costs are separate.
Access and getting around: The National Park grades the 3.5km return route “for some”, with about 120m ascent and sections as steep as 1:4. Surfaces include tarmac and gravel. Suitable all-terrain equipment, battery range and individual ability matter; benches do not make this a flat walk. Other paths include steps and softer ground.

Visiting with children: Choose the woodland climb only if the group is comfortable with its length and gradients. Allow extra time for rests, use suitable footwear and turn back if the weather or energy level changes. The summit can be exposed; a town lunch is easier to arrange after returning.
