Belfast has substantial indoor choices, but they are spread across the city. Choose the subject you want to spend time with: art and collections at Ulster Museum, the shipbuilding story at Titanic Belfast, or the city’s own history inside City Hall. Shortening the journey between stops matters as much as choosing a roof.
For a flexible wet half-day, spend around two hours in the Ulster Museum and allow 45–60 minutes for a lunch or warm-drink break. A shorter alternative is one gallery section and the break. These are editorial allowances, and the museum’s usual Monday closure needs checking before you set off. If Titanic is your priority, secure an available entry slot and arrange transport to Titanic Quarter; SS Nomadic requires an outdoor transfer and parts of the ship are not an all-weather substitute for the galleries. City Hall offers a shorter central indoor visit. Avoid stacking ticket times across town, and do not use St George’s Market as a midweek fallback. Read building access information in advance so shelter does not come at the cost of an unsuitable route.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Art, natural science and history share a building beside Botanic Gardens. The variety makes this a useful choice when companions have different interests: agree on one section each, rather than attempting every gallery. It is also a substantial indoor visit that does not require a general admission budget.
Belfast’s shipbuilding story is the reason to come here: the exhibition puts the liner back into the industrial city that made it. Give the galleries your attention before stepping outside to take in the scale of the waterfront. SS Nomadic, included with the Titanic Experience ticket, adds the different experience of boarding a surviving ship.
The visitor exhibition is a good starting point for understanding Belfast beyond its best-known ship. It moves through work, language, civic life and difficult periods of the city’s history in rooms within City Hall. Choose it for context before exploring the streets, and leave space to reflect rather than racing through the displays.
Browse food and craft stalls beneath the market hall’s high roof, then choose something to eat instead of treating lunch as an afterthought. Friday, Saturday and Sunday have different mixes of traders, so the experience depends on when you come. Leave room for an unplanned find rather than arriving with a checklist of stalls.

Ulster Museum normally needs no general admission booking and lets you choose a shorter visit. Check that it is open and confirm special exhibitions before travelling. City Hall exhibition tickets are normally obtained on the day but adult entry is paid.
