Chester City Walls and Eastgate Clock

The raised walkway puts Chester’s busy streets, gates and changing roofline in context. Make a short section part of a first visit and look for the ornate Eastgate Clock, rather than treating the whole circuit as a compulsory achievement. The surviving defences combine work from several periods.

Before you go

The council’s repair programme still lists work by Eastgate and other supported sections. Follow current signs and check the works page before setting off; a projected completion date is not confirmation that repairs have finished.

Where to find it: Access points around the historic centre; Eastgate Street is a useful place to orientate yourself.

Tickets and booking: No general admission ticket. Check local access notices on the day, especially if completing the circuit matters to you.
Access and getting around: The full circuit is not a guaranteed step-free route. Ask the visitor information centre about a suitable section and exit; steps, narrow areas and temporary works can affect a walk. Viewing the clock from street level is an alternative.

Visiting with children: Choose one short stretch with an easy return to the streets. Keep children close on the raised walkway and save energy for a later stop.
