A wet Chester day is easiest when you choose one indoor subject and give it proper time. The Grosvenor Museum offers Roman history, the cathedral offers architecture during visiting hours, and Storyhouse lets you choose between an informal library stop and a booked film or performance. Outdoor transfers still need a little planning.
For a flexible wet half-day, allow 60–90 minutes at the museum, then 45–60 minutes for lunch. Decide afterwards whether the walk north to Storyhouse, roughly 15–20 minutes by a direct central route, is worthwhile in the conditions. These are editorial estimates. Keep only the museum and lunch for a shorter outing. Alternatively, centre the day on a film at Storyhouse and arrive with time for food before its scheduled start. Check Monday museum closure and cathedral sightseeing restrictions before leaving home. The Rows can make a short architectural detour between showers, but should not be the foundation of a fully indoor plan.

Start with the Roman galleries for a closer understanding of the people behind Chester’s ancient remains. The museum is a useful companion to the amphitheatre, turning a short outdoor look at ruins into a more rounded history outing. Choose a subject rather than trying to cover every gallery.
Give the sandstone cathedral time beyond a photograph of its tower. The large interior rewards a slower look at its stonework and windows, with a different atmosphere from the surrounding shopping streets. It is a working church, so sightseeing must fit around worship and events.
A library, cinema and theatre share this arts venue, giving you several ways to spend time indoors. Drop in to read and browse, or make a film or performance your booked focus. The library is a useful low-cost pause even when there is no show that suits your date.

Storyhouse’s library allows an informal reading or browsing visit, so you can shorten the stop when the weather improves. General building access is free. A film or performance is a different choice with a ticket and fixed running time; decide which sort of visit you want before reserving anything.
