Chester Roman Amphitheatre

See the exposed portion of the amphitheatre and picture the scale of Roman Chester beyond the modern streets. This is an archaeological site rather than an intact arena or a long indoor exhibition. It works particularly well before or after the Roman galleries at the Grosvenor Museum.

English Heritage describes a level viewing route around the excavations, with steps into the central area. You can understand the site from the perimeter without making the descent.

Tickets and booking: No ticket for general access during daylight hours. Schools and organised groups should contact the Grosvenor Museum in advance.
Access and getting around: The surrounding pavement and path offer views down to the remains. The central area requires steps; uneven surfaces and drops need attention.

Visiting with children: Keep the visit short and explain what children are looking at before expecting ruins to hold their interest. Supervise around the excavated edges.
