CHICHESTER GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Canal-side walk / CHICHESTER

Chichester Canal Basin and Towpath

Start at the city basin for boats and a short waterside walk, then turn back when you have had enough. The full towpath towards the marina is a much longer outing, not a shortcut back to the centre. A basin visit can fit around a train journey; a boat trip needs its own ticket and departure time.

Before you go

Choose a short out-and-back stretch for a city day. The full route is four miles one way, so plan the return before walking towards the harbour.

The practical details

Where to find it
Canal Wharf, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Walking is free; boat trips are separate paid activities. Scheduled summer cruises usually last 75 minutes and return to the basin, but sailing dates depend on boat and crew availability. Book ahead and confirm the actual calendar; do not assume a daily winter service or a through boat to the harbour.
Access and getting around
Check the towpath surface and current notices before extending beyond the basin, especially after rain. For a paid cruise, contact the Trust about the pontoon ramp, boat lift and limited wheelchair spaces. On-site toilets are available before boarding; confirm shore facilities for a walk-only visit.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Stay close to children beside the unfenced water. A short look at boats can be enough for younger visitors. If booking a cruise, under-twos travel free but must still be included in passenger numbers; check the group’s seating and access needs.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–90 minutes for a short walk for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
