Chichester offers a useful free-entry day of local history and public gardens. The Novium’s ordinary galleries, donation-supported cathedral and two central parks give you choices in different weather. Check opening and separate exhibition charges, then budget for travel and food.
Start with the Novium’s general collection on a day when it is open. The bathhouse remains and local-history displays can provide the main indoor visit without an admission charge. Temporary exhibitions and events may cost extra, so check the specific display before heading upstairs with an expectation that every part is free. Donations are welcome, but the ordinary visit does not require a purchase. The cathedral also welcomes individual visitors by donation, although groups have separate booking charges. Its current graduation closure runs from 14–18 September 2026, and services or rehearsals can restrict later visits. A free-entry plan still needs an opening check. Do not turn attendance at a service into a substitute for the sightseeing route you intended. Choose Bishop’s Palace Gardens for planting and a short rest, or Priory Park for open grass and children’s play. They provide different breaks, so there is no need to complete both. Bring a picnic if you want to control spending, follow posted rules and leave the planted areas undisturbed. The Bishop’s private palace and the Guildhall interior are separate from ordinary public garden access. A practical free morning is an hour at the Novium, a café or picnic lunch and 30–60 minutes in one park. Allow roughly 10–15 minutes between the museum and your chosen central garden, with extra time for slower walking. For a shorter visit, omit the museum if the calendar does not fit and make a garden-and-street wander instead. If rain is persistent and the cathedral is closed, shorten the day rather than treating a paid gallery or a closed museum as a free indoor fallback. The canal basin adds another free option on the station side of the city. Walk out only as far as you are comfortable returning; a cruise and café purchases cost extra, and the marina is four miles away along the full towpath. Pallant House has free ground-floor and Print Room access, but its main galleries charge, so the full gallery is not included in this guide’s free attraction list. Parking, public transport and meals remain separate costs.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Begin with the Roman bathhouse remains preserved inside this purpose-built museum, then explore the district’s people and changing landscape upstairs. The Novium is a useful first stop for understanding the city beneath today’s streets. Keep the permanent displays as a short visit, or add the temporary exhibition if its subject appeals.
Look at the changing light and architecture, then choose a few artworks or chapels to explore more closely. Chichester’s cathedral brings historic fabric and later artistic commissions into one working religious building. An unhurried ground-floor visit leaves time for the adjoining garden, while a guided tour can give the spaces more context.
Step away from the shopping streets into planting, trees and a pergola close to the cathedral. The public garden works as a modest pause between indoor visits: wander through a few sections, find a seat and watch how the cathedral appears above the greenery. This is a garden visit, not admission to the Bishop’s private palace.
Priory Park combines open grass and a children’s play area with reminders of the city’s older defences. Look at the Guildhall from outside, then choose between a play break, a seat under the trees and a short look towards the walls and motte. It is a useful place to let a museum morning settle rather than another timed attraction.
Start at the city basin for boats and a short waterside walk, then turn back when you have had enough. The full towpath towards the marina is a much longer outing, not a shortcut back to the centre. A basin visit can fit around a train journey; a boat trip needs its own ticket and departure time.
