Priory Park

Priory Park combines open grass and a children’s play area with reminders of the city’s older defences. Look at the Guildhall from outside, then choose between a play break, a seat under the trees and a short look towards the walls and motte. It is a useful place to let a museum morning settle rather than another timed attraction.

Before you go

Treat the Guildhall as an exterior landmark unless you have checked a specific public opening or event. Its normal public access is very limited.

Tickets and booking: The public park is free without a general admission ticket. Follow gate times and notices; dogs, cycling and barbecues are prohibited under the posted park rules. Guildhall events, sports bookings and occasional activities have separate arrangements.
Access and getting around: Use a formal park entrance and choose paths to suit your needs. Grass, historic ramparts and the motte are different from a level paved route; climbing them is optional. Public toilets are in the park near the café building, including accessible facilities; confirm current opening.

Visiting with children: The equipped play area and grass make a good change after a museum. Respect cricket and other organised activity, supervise on raised ground and choose a meeting point before children move between play and picnic areas.
