Lyle Hill and the Free French Memorial

Visit the viewpoint and Free French memorial for a wider view of the Clyde and the surrounding hills. The climb gives this stop a different character from the level waterfront: the approach can be steep, and views depend on conditions. Treat the memorial respectfully and leave enough time to return before weather or daylight deteriorates.

The promoted walk from the Esplanade is about four miles with roughly 110 metres of ascent; it is not a short flat extension.

Tickets and booking: There is no attraction admission charge for the public viewpoint. Check weather and daylight, and distinguish time at the memorial from the longer walk to reach it.
Access and getting around: The promoted route uses tarmac but includes steep climbing. A separate approach to the viewpoint can reduce walking, but confirm transport and individual access needs rather than assuming the whole route is step-free and easy. Wind and poor visibility affect the experience.

Visiting with children: Choose this for children comfortable with hills and road-aware walking, or arrange a shorter viewpoint visit separately. Carry layers and keep the full walking loop optional; it is not a playground stop.
