Choose free art, a performance or an indoor activity session. The useful wet-day plan is the one whose opening or booking you have checked, with exposed waterfront walking kept optional.
The Wyllieum offers an indoor cultural visit with free ordinary admission and level gallery access. Check its actual opening day before setting off: the regular pattern is Wednesday–Sunday, and exhibition changeovers can affect what is available. Choose a few works to explore carefully rather than expecting the gallery to occupy a whole day. Food elsewhere and a manageable journey between stops can be more useful than adding a second activity simply to fill time. The Waterfront Leisure Complex suits a more active wet day, but the session timetable is essential. Public swimming, leisure-pool features and ice skating have different arrangements; the building being open does not guarantee your preferred activity is running. Ask about supervision rules, access needs and equipment hire before travelling. Allow time to change, eat and get home comfortably, especially with children. A swim or skating session can stand on its own as the main event. For a seated indoor outing, choose a Beacon performance that suits your interests and the group’s ages. Reserve suitable seats and discuss wheelchair spaces or hearing support with the box office. Selected relaxed or adapted shows have their own dates, so do not assume every performance offers the same arrangements. The Esplanade, Battery Park and Lyle Hill remain outdoor places, not dependable shelter; poor visibility also reduces the point of a hilltop view. For a shorter wet day, keep one confirmed gallery visit, session or show with a meal. The Watt Institution is currently excluded because building works have delayed reopening, so older museum listings should not be used as a fallback without checking the council’s current notice.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Discover the work and questioning spirit of George Wyllie alongside a changing exhibition programme in the gallery at Greenock Ocean Terminal. This is a public art space, not a facility reserved for cruise passengers. Give yourself time to look closely and talk about a few works rather than treating it as a quick stop for the building alone.
Choose a public swim or ice-skating session for an active indoor break. The complex has different facilities and timetables, so choose the session first rather than arriving on the strength of the building’s general opening hours. Leisure-pool features and special events may have more limited availability than ordinary lane swimming.
Choose a play, concert, comedy show or family performance from the Beacon’s current programme. The waterfront setting gives the evening a sense of place, but the event is the reason to come. Build the rest of the day around the actual start and finish rather than assuming a performance is available whenever you arrive.
