Greenock and Gourock look across the same Clyde waters but offer different kinds of day. Greenock has the stronger choice of art, performance and indoor leisure; Gourock suits a waterfront outing with a seasonal outdoor swim or a separately reached bay. These two towns are our current Inverclyde collection, not a complete tour of every community or upland path. Choose the activity that matters most and leave the views as a flexible companion. A change in weather need not spoil the day if the indoor option is checked before you set off.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
Choose Greenock when you want more than a promenade walk. The Wyllieum gives the day a public art focus, while the Beacon Arts Centre and Waterfront Leisure Complex offer programme-led alternatives. They are not interchangeable walk-in attractions: select an exhibition, show or public session. The Esplanade provides a simpler outdoor pause than the steep climb towards Lyle Hill.
Gourock suits an unhurried look along the waterfront and a seasonal swim in the heated outdoor pool. The Kempock Stone adds local folklore to the town walk, while Gourock Park offers a modest family break. Lunderston Bay is a separate coastal outing beyond the centre. Choose it instead of extending every town walk, and leave time for food and the return journey.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
A short Greenock gallery visit and a modest Gourock waterfront stop can fit together if the connection works, but a swim, theatre performance or long hill walk deserves more time. Pick the main activity first and let the second town be optional. The promoted route to Lyle Hill involves a significant climb; it is not the same outing as a level section of the Esplanade.
Visit the Wyllieum on an open day, have lunch, then choose a suitable stretch of the Esplanade or a family pause at Battery Park. The shorter version keeps art and a waterfront stroll. If the forecast is poor, choose an actual public swim or skating session instead of the outdoor section, allowing time to change. A Beacon performance can form a separate evening plan when the programme and tickets suit.
Families can keep a park visit simple, with play, food and a chosen turnaround rather than a long continuous walk. An outdoor Gourock swim needs the current season and child rules checked; a warm pool does not mean a year-round timetable. Couples may prefer the Wyllieum followed by lunch, or an evening performance. A climb to the memorial at Lyle Hill is an optional viewpoint outing for suitable weather and energy.
The Wyllieum has free ordinary entry, and public waterfront walks and parks give both towns low-cost choices. Travel and parking remain separate costs. Greenock offers the more useful indoor mix, but public pool and skating sessions differ from building hours and theatre entry depends on an event. Gourock’s outdoor pool, Lunderston Bay and the standing-stone walk should not be advertised as a day of indoor shelter.
Gourock’s pool has a seasonal public-swimming calendar; check the dates before making it your reason to travel. Beach facilities at Lunderston can have limited hours, and shoreline conditions are not a guarantee of safe swimming. Follow local access notices around the Kempock Stone and choose the lower waterfront if the approach does not suit. Current parking rules may require a ticket or registration even where a free period applies.
