INVERARAY GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Rural Highland life in an open-air museum / NEAR INVERARAY

Auchindrain Township

Allow time to move between the stone buildings and think about the households that shared this working settlement. The township offers a different perspective from Inveraray’s castle and courtroom, focusing on rural life, homes and farm work. Explore at a walking pace with stops inside the buildings that are open, rather than expecting a single indoor gallery.

Before you go

Auchindrain is six miles south of Inveraray beside the A83. It is a separate trip, not a walkable central attraction, and its open-air layout remains weather-dependent even though it is a museum.

The practical details

Where to find it
Auchindrain, Argyll PA32 8WD
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
The current ticket page lists daily opening from 10:30 to 16:00 and free parking. Check dates and any seasonal changes before setting out. The museum currently asks visitors to email because its phone lines are unavailable; use the official contact details.
Access and getting around
Paths between buildings may be uneven, grassy or gravel, with steps and thresholds in historic structures. Ask the museum about the precise route and facilities you need. Do not assume that every restored building or outdoor area has step-free access.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Use the buildings and everyday objects to ask how families cooked, worked and lived together. Dress for outdoor time and supervise children around uneven ground. A shorter selection of buildings can be more satisfying than covering the whole site.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
