Inveraray Castle and the jail explore different sides of local history, and either works better with time to look properly than as a rushed stop on a driving itinerary. The castle closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; the jail visitor page also lists a reduced Thursday–Monday pattern, so check its booking calendar before planning around either attraction. The waterfront and planned streets make a useful interval for food and loch views. Stay within the open stone-pier area: the timber extension is closed. A short stroll can be enough when the weather changes, and it does not need to become a shopping list or a long circuit. Dùn na Cuaiche is a real uphill woodland walk, with around three miles of return walking from the castle area. Give it a separate block of time, suitable shoes and a daylight margin. It is not the same experience as a ticketed castle-garden visit. Auchindrain lies six miles south and offers an open-air look at rural Highland life. Allow transport and weather-appropriate clothing if you choose it. For a shorter stay, keep one central attraction, lunch and a waterfront pause; the rest can wait. Confirm opening and access first, then decide how much walking everyone actually wants.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
