The route rewards steady effort rather than hurried sightseeing, with the hilltop monument providing a clear objective. Choose a day with useful visibility and enough daylight, and leave time to descend before returning to town for food.

Before you go

This is a steep woodland walk, not an accessible garden path or a brief detour through the castle grounds. The return is around three miles from the castle area, with additional distance from central town.

Tickets and booking: There is no normal walking admission charge, but castle parking is charged and indoor/garden visits need tickets. Check current estate access and weather; avoid strong winds or poor conditions in woodland. The viewpoint does not guarantee a clear panorama.
Access and getting around: Steep, uneven woodland tracks make the route unsuitable for wheelchairs and many visitors with walking difficulties. Mud, roots and weather affect footing. Obtain the current estate route and follow any forestry or access notices rather than relying on an old downloaded map.

Visiting with children: This suits children already comfortable with a sustained uphill walk. Carry water, suitable footwear and layers, keep close on rough ground and turn back if conditions or energy change. It is not a buggy outing.
